(Slightly Stoopid) These 4 cats from Ocean Beach County Cali have been putting in work for a hot minute (5 total lp's to date). Somewhat products of the group Sublime, they have carved out a niche for themselves & now you can see "Stoopid Heads" from the left to the right coasts & everywhere in between. You won't often hear Slightly Stoopid on radio stations but you will see them doing about 200+ tour dates per year. "Closer To The Sun", the newset lp, features Barrington Levy & Mr. Mutton among others. Along the way, they have supported such acts as The Marley Bros, Sublime, The Roots, G-Love and Special Sauce, Blink 182, Toots and The Maytals, N.E.R.D, Pennywise, and The Warped Tour, to name a few. They are a true touring jam band & if they are in your neck of the woods, I highly advise you attend a show. Oh yea, major labels - I wouldn't even bother - I don't think you'll get anywhere as they are very happy over @ Skunk Records.

He's recorded 2 full lp's & a gang of singles from behind bars (much with the help of Capleton - who dubbed him "Jah Cure"). Jamaica! Jamaica! Prison or no prison, dude has a vibe that is timeless but time will truly tell for Jah Cure.

To those of you who have seen the movie ROCKERS - Remeber the scene when "Horsemouth" (main character) goes through the
studio & you hear the heavy tune, see the vocals get voiced and see
the bredren press fresh vinyl...ok...Well think of the artist who
sings the tune..called "Graduation in Zion" during that scene
30 second download...

Artist name is Kiddus I:

Well its been almost 30yrs since that movie was made, search the
reggae archives and you will only see sparse mentions of tunes from
Kiddus I...

Search a lickle more and you will stumble upon MAKASOUND record label
out of France...Yes, the French label has a serious attitude when it
comes to reggae...just read the doctrine on the home page
(currently the only English
translation on the page)...until such time...we rely on this music to
mend all unclear.

If that does not do it for you then...the entire concept of the
boutique label "Inna De Yard" ... will most definitely get you.. Earl
Chinna Smith, Kiddus I, and Linval Thompson.. being the foundation of
this real ROOTS style (from the yard..all acoustic) music offering.

And finally, a note about the film and the importance of the many
artist that contributed to the production. Reggae music in the late
70's and early 80's had so so many great voices aside from Bob Marley
(who none will try to discredit). The worlds reggae archives have long
out weighed the music being produced in the last ten years when it
comes to culture/roots reggae. With that said, in recent years we
have been fortunate to have artist like Luciano, Capelton, Sizzla,
Yami Bolo, Mikey General, Buju, Morgan Heritage, Anthony B...and the
new breed artist like Natural Black, Lutan Fhya, I Wayne, Bascom
X, Richie Spice, Warrior King, Jah Cure, Stephen Marely, Ras Shilo,
Gentle Man...to name a few.

This movie showed years ago what is still true today with this music,
many great voices are contained within this genre. Many of these
voices go undiscovered by the masses or are turned away by major
corporate programs. Things may change in the years to come, but our
past and present show that many names make up the musical
landscape...not just the faces on the billboards!

First, I thought I was the only one was up on that Willie Nelson LP (Mills isn't the only one about to have his first immersion into the 'Nelson experience'... recognize the potential (Blackwell + skilled songwriters = gems).

Second, now that heads in NYC are forcing the man to stand and be counted (peer pressure; works in every millenia), maybe we can induce him to bless us with a handpicked irie set of music... if he can fit it into a 30 minute format by October 1, we might even be able to convince him to drop it here, eh?

It seems that Jahah acapellas have a nasty habit of destroying hard drives after they've been remixed, leaving only the folder that THEY'RE in salvageable. So I'd like to ~~thank~~ bill Jahah for ruining my 160GB Western Digital HD that fucked up while I was in a different country. Out of 160GB containing about 6 years worth of rare music, pictures and assorted bullshit, only the folder titled JAHAH REMIXES could be saved. It seems the same has happened to Raj too judging from his post below this one.

And its this post that has sparked me to finally let these remixes out into the wide open. Most of these were done last summer, shortly after the release of "Mama's Only Son", though a couple (marked with a *) were done this morning over tea and toast while unpacking more music from the flight over. (BTW - yes muhfuckas I am back in Florida)

you know, this guy right here, who rolls with these cats... and well, people were kind enough to send us mastered acapellas from the LP... suffice it to say, someone might have made a pact to work on some blends and remixes based on those tracks, before he got tied up with numerous research projects and 'obligations'...

regardless, rumor has it that someone is still working on those blends, and trying to salvage some files that were saved on one of those pieces of storage media that always seem to be unusable at the most inopportune times. But, we did manage to grab a few, and will be posting them for commentary, criticism, and the like in the following ~~days~~ weeks...

here's a sample, keeping in mind that the final mixdown of the background vocals is on another file that is AWOL, but has all manner of panning, filtering, and this lil' choral hall reverb effect that is rather effective...

The group has decided to go independent and release their upcoming material on their label, Barak Entertainment. So I picked up a few of these as of late. If I have to tell someone to purchase one - 60 Visions: A Book of Prophecy by Bob Marley would be the choice. You can cop the shit for $13 bones @ Amazon. I couldn't find it in any of the major bookstores such as Barnes & Noble or Borders - maybe thats a good thing. My lady picked the book up & saw that it was leather bound...kinda odd for a Bob Marley Prophecy book but, it is made of non-animal shit, not the real shit as in poop - ahhhhhhhhh you know what i'm sayin.

Speaking of poop, I keep it right by my toilet so every time I dive in for a 10 minute "sit-down", I can get out of that NY State Of Mind (Nas' Honeymoon is Over).

Speaking of sauces and spices allows me to link nicely into a few mp3 cuts for your perusal.

First up is Richie Spice (did you see what I did there?), brother of Pliers (he of Chaka Demus & Pliers) fame. The ultra low budget vid for 'Earth A Run Red' is currently spinning reasonably frequently on Channel U, and the mix of grainy Jamaican market shots, and Richie looking like Brother James the S1W on a beach trip, makes the vid a must-see. The song meanwhile is simply smashing. Also tacked on here is the spiffing 'I Have Got You', Richie's summery use of the Lava Ground riddim.

Shut Up And Dance will mean little to US peeps. Those in the UK with half a brain however may well remember the awful 'Raving I'm Raving' track from the early 90s. They may also remember the Ragga Twins, who dropped the seminal "Reggae Owes Me Money" on the SUAD label around the same time. Largely ignored by many because it was difficult to pigeonhole, the mixture of reggae, breaks, techno and dance music influences was a big hit with A to the L, who now presents you with a couple of the more famous album cuts. Sauce reference? Oh yeah - these are hotter than tabasco (ya little asshole).

Completing the quintet is Sugar Minott's 'Show Me That You Love Me Girl' a classic from the Channel 1 Recording studio vaults. Sauce reference, here? None actually, but I'm sure you'll be glad I included it.

I can't pinpoint for certain when it was that Kris, to me, crossed over from being a legendary emcee to just an annoying gimp, but I do know that he used to rip the piss out of the jamaican accent and that really used to jar me off. That probably started the rot.

Strange person that I am, I prefer "Ghetto Music" to the arguably better "Criminal Minded" and "By Any Means Necessary" albums. I used to bang that shit religiously for months after it came out (no homo). One of the other things that pissed me off about this album though (besides Kris's 'toasting' skills) was the fact that the remix of 'You Must Learn' wasn't on there. The remix of this song that used the same break that Flash used for that song I can't remember the name of now, is STILL one of BDP's greatest songs. Unfortunately the album version, despite being lyrically nice, is the musically equivalent of knitting. The only people who have let me down WORSE than this with the old 'wrong mix on the album' trick, are EPMD with 'Give The People'. But anyway...

Then there was the old 'I am Hiphop', 'You are Hiphop', 'They are Hiphop' shite. Don't talk complete bollocks. I am A to the L. And I be blowing the soul out of this horn. You be Krs-One, utterer of bobbins. The end.

How about tricking us all into buying "The Sneak Attack"? That was a bitch move for sure. How about taking some of Primo's best beats, and showing amazing skills in rocking over them, thus producing one of your best ever albums... and then never working with Primo again? Smart move.

The real Mike Jones album...

I still have to write up "Who Is Mike Jones?" and although my first impressions were that it was decent, I don't think its anywhere near as good as I expected it to be. Others fucking hate it, but that's on them - maybe they should continue to wank off the Dips and Amerie with all the other trendy cocks.
Anyway, I suggest that you download "WIMJ" from wherever, and instead splash your hard earned on this instead. I already reviewed it on Altrap.com here but for those too lazy to click on the link, here's the deal. Mr Jones rips freestyles over a gang of familiar beats - instead of coming off like the regular push-a-button-start-a-track style of freestyle tapes that some idiot djs come with, each track has been blended with the next one - beat, freestyle and all, by that dude Michael Watts. Add a hint of screwing (no homo) and the standard Swisha House chops and you have the ingredients for a decent mixtape.

Jones takes it to another level though with his delivery - yeah, his words are freestyled... yeah, they're ~~a little~~ very repetitive at times (can you say "Two Eight One Three Three Oh"?) ... but its how he flows on beat, how he casually shares with us the information that his "dick hang long like Elvis' sideburns"... he has that (cliche alert) X-Factor... its the same reason that Luda features on a lot of cats' current top 10 emcees lists... we know others have more skills but the confident delivery and sense of humor gets Luda over. Mr Michael Jones is the same.

So as per usual for the rmhh-ers with no lives, the regular Sunday chat marathon was on and popping yesterday, and somewhere in amongst the madness we stumbled across Stanford University's (I think) rap show, done by Kevvy Kev. As we listened in growing disbelief, we came to the conclusion that

1) the show was wack as fuck because of the shite up-their-arse playlist - the only time we got interested at all was when he inexplicably dropped Jigga's '22 Twos' between two log-sawers...
2) the host was a cock - he told people to hit him on aim for requests, and we did, and not ONCE did he play any Poison Clan

Anyways I decided to archive the commentary we gave last night as the show streamed. Most of the tracks, we didn't know, and don't care to know as they were complete monkeychowder, so it probably won't read as well as it did last night when the show was actually playing, but tough titty. A gap in the commentary usually means a new track is beginning...
